What Mike Huckabee would bring to the table as Vice-President
March 16, 2008 by Larry
Now that John McCain has seemingly wrapped up the Republican nomination, he is faced with the task of getting to the convention and picking his running mate. It’s no secret that I and a lot of Huckabee supporters would like to see him included on the ticket with McCain. In fact, there are a lot of people who will refuse to vote for McCain, unless Huckabee is his running mate. I haven’t made my mind up exactly what I will do, except to have realized that a McCain ticket will be ultimately more attractive with Mike Huckabee as Vice-President. McCain’s choice of Vice-President may have a lot to do with his winning or losing the election. As McCain tries to come to a decision, I believe he should consider something about Mike Huckabee. Although some pundits would have us believe that Huckabee’s support came only from evangelical Christians, he has also garnered support from some moral conservative Democrats and Independents. As well as bringing the support of the conservative Christians on-board, I believe he would also give those Democrats and Independents someone to vote for when they are unhappy with either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton. What I would really like to see is Huckabee to actually win the nomination at the convention, but barring that, let me explain why I believe he would make a great Vice-President and would be a good choice for John McCain.
Let’s start by examining Huckabee’s record as Governor of Arkansas. He served in that office for ten and a half years and when he ascended to the office, the state was in a very bad shape. This was from the lack of proper governorship by Bill Clinton and Jim Guy Tucker. They did everything except govern the state and solve it’s problems and Mike Huckabee had a big mess to clean up when he took office. The roads were some of the worst in the nation, the education system was in a mess, and the health-care system wasn’t much better. Huckabee was able to effectively work with the state legislature, Democratic I might add, to raise the money needed to fix the roads, repair the education system, and get a lot of Arkansas children covered by health insurance. Sure, there were some taxes raised, but some of those were voted on by the people and the others were rescinded when they were no longer needed. Despite what the Club For Growth and other organizations might tell you, Huckabee’s record speaks for itself. There were things that needed to be done when he took office and he proceeded to get them done. I know some of this first hand because I live in Oklahoma and work in Fort Smith, Arkansas and I have seen the difference in the state before and after Mike Huckabee. He made a big difference in the state, for the good.
Looking back at Huckabee’s tenure as Governor of Arkansas, I can not fail to mention his actions during the Katrina crisis. Those actions alone should show us all we need to know about how Mike Huckabee responds in a crisis. He saw how badly the crisis was being handled, before, during, and after Katrina struck and he made a decision to help the people. He put out a statement to his staff and the state workers with one mandate. He wanted to help those people and worry about how to pay for it later. It is just part of how he thinks and what he is all about and it stems from his pro-life position. He believes all life has value and he doesn’t stop at just trying to prevent abortion. He tries his best to take care of people after they are born as well. As always with Huckabee, the people came first.
While Huckabee does not have the big money connections of Mitt Romney, he does have something that money can not buy. That is an understanding of how the economy effects the normal people of this country. As he likes to put it, the people who carry the bags and serve the food. During the Michigan debate, he was the only candidate on the stage besides Ron Paul who really understood that the economy might not be as good as what the other candidates and President Bush were saying it was. While Romney is constantly declaring how he understands the economy and how it works, I believe Huckabee understands how the economic decisions made by Congress and the President effect everyone in the country, all the way from the millionaires to those in poverty. To borrow an old saying, Huckabee has been there and done that. Money can’t buy that kind of experience and it is clear, Mitt Romney doesn’t have a clue how the normal people of America are doing.
High on my lists of Huckabee positives is his understanding and support of The Fair Tax. This is related to his understanding of the economy, in my opinion. I have heard him tell the story about the man who was working to put his daughter through college by working two jobs. Because of his being in a higher tax bracket, the gain he would have realized by working the extra job was almost negated by the taxes he had to pay. I believe Huckabee understands how over taxed and over burdened the people of this country really are. It’s not just The Fair Tax in particular, but his understanding of how the current tax code penalizes us all.
Something else I believe Huckabee brings to the table is his ability to think outside of the normal solutions to problems and come up with something creative that will actually work. Remember how he answered the question about the economic stimulus package that was being debated in Congress at the time of the Florida debate? The other candidates were busy endorsing that plan and Huckabee shocked everyone with his answer. He said the best way to stimulate the economy was to start working on the infrastructure of our country. He realized that doing that would provide American workers with jobs and American companies with an opportunity to sell their products, such as steel and concrete. Instead of borrowing money from China to stimulate our economy, we would be using our own money to provide the stimulus and to shore up our infrastructure at the same time. It was such a creative answer, it was endorsed by other governors, both Republican and Democrat.
During the entire campaign, we have heard Mitt Romney and Barack Obama talk about how they wanted to change the way Washington works. Right now, Washington works for the people with big money. The more money you have, the more likely you will be able to make connections to the right people and hold sway over the decisions that are made in Washington. Barack Obama is certainly a Washington insider and Mitt Romney is certainly involved with the big money people. I don’t think the kind of change they are offering is the kind of change Mike Huckabee would bring to Washington, even as Vice-President.
I believe Mike Huckabee would be able to use the office of the Vice-President as more than just a position to cast a tie breaking vote in the Senate. From seeing how Huckabee has conducted his campaign and how he conducted his office as Governor of Arkansas, it is clear he is a tireless worker. I believe he would use the office to actively build relationships with members of Congress and the Senate and would use those relationships to bring forth change for the good of the people of this country. As with anything Mike Huckabee does, he would take the job of Vice-President very seriously and I believe he would use it to get things done.
That’s my take!
Larry

For me, I hope that McCain does not pick Huckabee. In recent memory, I cannot find one person that was the VP pick on a ticket that lost the general election that later came back to be President (or even win the nomination). I have serious doubts that McCain can beat Clinton or Obama, and I don’t want Huckabee saddled with being tied to what may be a loss of epic proportions.
As has been the case during the whole campaign, only the people, Huck’s army of supporters, working TOGETHER, can give Mike a valid shot at a spot on the ticket. And we need to spend less time being pundits and strategists, and more time trying to get Mike into the Whitehouse this year, even if it means running the risk of being on a losing ticket.
But McCain’s going to lose you say…. It will hurt Mike to be on a losing ticket, look at Edwards!
To this I answer, Edward’s platform never had substance or crossover appeal anyway. Edwards didn’t have the magnetic appeal, or the ability to truly connect that Mike has. I cannot think that the exposure that Mike would get in a general election campaign could do anything but HELP him on the road to 2012. Even if McCain loses, which is almost expected anyway. The longer Mike hung on in the primary, the greater his support base grew. The same will be the case if he’s campaigning in the general, only democrats and independents will be getting invaluable exposure to Mike.
Most of America STILL does not truly KNOW Mike Huckabee. Those who do, have grown to love, or at least respect him if they are not blinded by their own agenda. By the end of the general election season, America will Know Mike for better or worse. That level of national recognition cannot be matched by any work that Mike might do in strictly conservative circles over the next four years.
Mike needs a forum from which to appeal to independents and democrats as well as conservatives, in preparation for his next run, and the general election will give him a headstart.
If Mike is not selected, then we go back to the drawing board and concentrate on 2012. If Mccain’s VP is anyone except Romney, then the playing field is even for the next go round and he’s on his own this election. BUT we cannot sit by and let Romney campaign for that VP spot unchallenged. He is entirely capable of using his access to money to force his way onto that ticket. We may not vote… but Mitt could flip flop his way back to the center and the GOP moderate/liberal ticket could actually win in this year’s economic environment.
We CANNOT afford to assume it won’t. We will lose our role in the GOP in such an event.
There was a time recently when I would’ve agreed with “onemom.” But with every day that passes, problems in this country grow a little bigger. I am now inclined to think that we need someone like Huckabee in the Whitehouse right now, and we need to take him however we can get him, even if it’s a VP position. Huckabee does not have have the passive, self-serving mindset of most VPs in recent history. Considering that, he might just be the VP who defies the trend and is successful in becoming president in 2012.
Gov. Huckabee may well be a good man and governor but he will add very little to the GOP ticket. He cannot put any blue or purple state in play for the party. He is not a proven fundraiser (like it or not the party is in desperate need of cash) and he is considered by many to be divisive.
I think it’s sad that you would even consider not voting for Sen. McCain. He definetly was not my first choice but if my choices are Hillary or Obama I’ll walk to vote if necessary.
You cannot honestly believe that the GOP ticket won’t be clearly superior to the Democrat ticket. Who will nominate better judges? Who will curb spending and cut government waste and programs better? Who is going to be better on pro-life issues.
I can understand your disappointment that your candidate didn’t win the nomination but to consider not voting for the party ticket is foolish. We must defeat the Democrats.
We better hope Obama doesn’t win or this country might not survive 4 years, much less 8 with him in office.
Kerry,
I understand where you are coming from. I have some reservations about it myself, but I think Huckabee on the ticket puts the Republicans in an entirely different realm of possibilities.
Garth,
It’s not so much disappointment that Huckabee didn’t win as it is John McCain himself. I honestly don’t know what to think about him except for one thing. I do not believe he can be trusted.
Mike Huckabee would be an excellent choice for VP because unlike McCain, he has extensive Executive experience-he understands what is required to actually make the conflicting requirements of the Federal government work in the real world.
Like McCain, he has a record of reaching across the aisle to get things done.
Unlike McCain, (or any other Senator) Huckabee has a history of developing plans that actually work in the real world.
Unlike McCain he has a history of getting top value for every tax dollar spent. Unlike McCain he has a workable economic plan that will return American manufacturing to a competitive posture in the global market.
Unlike McCain, he can inspire and stimulate Joe and Mary American to get involved in participative government.
Unlike McCain, Huckabee understands how important education is to our future, and unlike McCain, Huckabee has experience in actually dramatically improving the work of education (also in start contrast to the administrative boondoggle of “No Child Left Behind”.
Having Huckabee as VP would free-up McCain to focus on Global Terrorism while Huckabee cleans-up the mess left by the last four administrations, as he has quite professionally proven capable of doing in Arkansas.
Huckabee has proven the ability to earn the vote of African Americans, something that will definitely be needed by the Republicans if the current race-baiting Democrat nomination process continues-at it surely must do.
The Main Stream Media has worked hard to pigeon-hole Huckabee as appealing only to Evangelicals, and in the Politically Correct world, they did a pretty good job. As the campaign wore-on, more and more people got to see the real Huckabee, rather than the media-image of him, but by that time, too much damage had been done for him to block McCain’s nomination. A close look at how he worked in Arkansas clearly dispels any negative efforts to drive people to his beliefs.
Unlike McCain the impetuous, Mike Huckabee has a history of building relationships. He has never been afraid to present his ideas even to people that are disinclined to accept them at first glance. He is able to articulate his reasons for disagreement without attacking the person that disagrees. That is a key requirement for building effective coalitions without compromising principles.
Huckabee is also young enough to counter the concerns of the age of McCain.
The biggest obstacle that Huckabee faces is that he is an “outsider”. He is not beholden to the legions of special interests that control the decisions our government makes.
In 1994 the Republicans came into power promising transparency and improvement-but gave us same-o-same-o. In 2006 the Democrats came back into power promising transparency and improvement but gave us same-o-same-o Lite (accomplishing little more than feathering their own nests).
Huckabee and the Fair Tax would definitely force a cataclysmic change in the way business is done in Washington, and for that reason alone, he is most likely not going to get the opportunity.
Honesty, transparency and accountability are the only tools that will turn America back towards greatness. But I don’t think America has the stomach, the courage or the discipline to make it happen. That epitomizes why Huckabee won’t be McCain’s VP, in my opinion.
Gov. Huckabee is the only smart choice for VP. We need him in Washington yesterday. OK, ASAP. I don’t even know if I’m going to vote at all this November!
This man reminds me so much of Thomas Jefferson from the things I’ve read, and that is truly a good thing. The gov’s. vision is so much like Jefferson and Jefferson got it right. His core beliefs and values remind me so much of Huckabee.
If it’s a McCain/Huckabee ticket, I’m there. You couldn’t keep me from the polls!
Larry I agree with your main article but I want to ask about your McCain trust issues.
I agree that being able to trust a president is the most important thing.
When has McCain ever lied about anything ever?
Look at Hillary. She is a compulsive lier. She lies even when she doesn’t have to.
Is McCain looking a bit better now?
When has McCain ever attached anyone first?
Hillary will do anything and say anything and attack anyone to get elected.
With McCain you see is what you get.
With Hillary you have to look through all the false faces to find which Hillary you are dealing with.
Is McCain looking a bit better now?
Mike Huckabee is supporting McCain.
Is McCain looking a bit better now?
Every time a Huckabee supporter goes against his wishes and attacks McCain, they support Hillary.
As far as Obama.
You can trust him to do what he says he will do. Like Mike says “we just can’t afford him as president”.
I fully realize what you are talking about and I agree, up to a certain point. I also realize Hillary Clinton can not be trusted as far as I could throw her and Barack Obama, we agree on as well. My point about McCain is this. He has been in the front of the battle against special interests and their influence in Washington, but it looks as if he has been in bed with the special interests all along. That is why I say I do not trust Hohn McCain. It makes me wonder what he will do if he is elected President.
I haven’t heard about any special interest influences and I thought I was pretty up to date on him.
To what are you referring?
Timothy,
Please read this article and the ones it links to. You will see what I am talking about. Keep in mind that I am not particulary trying to talk anyone out of voting for McCain. I just think there is more to him than meets the eye and it may not all be positive.

Huckabee has a good chance of being selected v.p. for his:
1) vote-getting capacity in the ‘red’ and southern states.
2) his executive experience and winning democrats and blacks (aka African-Americans)
3) his winsome personality
And in the event of some confusion (compromised capacity of the Presidential candidate, for example, or some ‘killer scandal’
Huckabee is then probably the frontrunner among gop delegates.
Mike Huckabee is the ONLY logical choice for vice-president. He is a UNIFIER, a strong, consistent conservative, principled, with more executive governatorial experience that ANY candidate ever! He has the exact same character as Senator McCain himself! Both men refused to quit their respective campaigns when pundits, even friends (MCCAins own mgr. walked out on him) told them to give up. I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t want a president or vice-president who even knows the meaning of the word quit!! He has earned the spot since he came in 2nd to McCain in delegates and stayed in the race to the finish!!! Huckabee can be trusted, a most critical factor!!!
I want Mike Huckabee as Vice President. He is moral!!!
He has good judgement. He has good concepts when he
speaks. He is an excellent speaker and can bring a lot to
the table. McCain needs Mike Huckabee’s youth and
vitality!!! Huckabee has been a Govenor, he understands
the middle man, which is most of us!!! He has great appeal
to all people, Democrats and Republicans.
Go Mike, I will vote for you and McCain!!!
Jannis
I support Governor Huckabee for many reasons. I fail to see that he has any weaknesses as VP candidate.
1. He is honest and moral
2. He is personable
3. He is a proven leader on the executive level of government
4. He assures a solid south in the electoral college ( an absolute necessity for a Republican win)
5. He is young
6. He is an effective campaigner
7. He will draw conservative democrats in a race with Obama
8. Despite what the press would have us belive he is a proven uniter.
This is just excellent. The American people know the real deal when they see it. That is why, on a shoe-string budget, no less, Mike Huckabee won so many primary votes and continues to maintain a strong and undeniable following today.
People ultimately vote for the presidency with their hearts. When I consider the big money politics of other candidates and questionable loyalties, there’s no substituting passion for politicking.
Mike Huckabee is an individual who reminds Americans who they are amidst an ever-changing and fickle landscape. But he does it with a message of hope and optimism that seeks not to offer vague and ill-conceived promises, but to unite people toward realizing tangible results!
I hope Mr. McCain does not overlook the fresh ideas, proven selflessness, vision, inspiration, and integrity that Mr. Huckabee would bring to his administration. Not only would Mr. Huckabee continue to rally and restore the Republican Party, but the confidence of all American people in itself.
